Happy Earthy Day my fellow Earth peeps! April 22, 1970, marked the first celebrated Earth Day and now is a global day of celebration in more than 192 countries each year. It all started with an environmental teach-in, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, founded this day to be of education about environmental awareness. Senator Nelson hoped to raise national spotlight bringing awareness of air and water pollution.
The 1970’s were a huge push for important legislation that were passed such as; the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Also, in December 1970 the Environmental Protection Agency was established to protect human health and safeguarding the natural environment.
So, how have you spent your Earth Day so far? What? You didn’t even know it was Earth Day? No worries, make everyday Earth Day! Here are a few easy ways to make your Earth a little greener;
Keep your motor vehicle tuned up, check your tire pressure often, or thinking about a new vehicle look for one that will get better gas mileage. You know it won’t hurt you to jump on that bike to go a mile down the road to grab that bag of chips, not only that you will work off some calories before you indulge on those chips! All of these will help reduce emissions and make the Earth smile.
Stop The Leaking
Do you leave the water on while brushing your teeth? You know you do, we are all guilty of it at one point of time. Try to make yourself aware of turning the water off. What about that leaky faucet in your kitchen that you have been “meaning” to get to. Yes, I made air quotes towards you! Just one drop of water per second wastes over 1,300 gallons per year!
Mean Green Cleaning Machine
Next time you go purchase cleaning products, look for products with out chlorine or petroleum distillates. These are harmful to the environment, not to mention your family and pets. Go for the naturally derived products, which are safe to use.
Growing Like a Weed
We all dread the day we have to go weed our landscaping. They just keep coming back! So, you spray a little weed killer here and there… this isn’t the only way to control those annoying weeds. Invest in some great gardening gloves and tools and remove them by hand. It will be healthier for the environment since you won’t be using harsh herbicides and you will be outside in the fresh air working out those arms and legs by pulling out those mean weeds since you haven’t did it in two months!
Those Blue Cans
Hillsborough County’s recycling program went to Blue rolling carts back in 2013, Fill It, Tilt it, That’s How We Roll, was the motto. Hillsborough County made it easier to recycle by going single stream. Meaning, you can mix all the recyclables together in the rolling card without sorting. Have you made an effort to recycle instead of just tossing it in the trash? This is an easy way to make your home greener! These are the items that go into those big Blue recycling cards;
