This weekend Tampa was full of thousands participating in the 38th running of the Gasparilla Distance Classic road races. In 2014 the races had a record of 29,912 participants. This years Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic broke that record surpassing the number of entries from 2014 to this year of 33,300+ runners. To make sure each runner was well taken care of, early February, the announcement was made to caping the amount of racers in each race, the 15k at 6,000, the 5k at 14,000, the half marathon at 6,250, and the 8k at 5,000. As of Friday, February 20th each of the races were sold out except the 5k and they only had 1,000 available entries then, then shortly sold out.

Winners of the 2015 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic:
Saturday, February 21st races
Men’s Winner: Jon Mott, 28, of Babson Park (Polk County) took 1st to defended his 2014 title in 47 minutes, 59 seconds (47:59), pushing out second place, Rafal Matuszczak by five seconds.
Women’s Winner: Megan Goethais, 21, of Rochester, Michigan, took the women’s title coming in at 52 Minutes, 17 seconds (52:17), almost four minutes faster than second place, Rebecca Howart of Tampa
Men’s Winner: Evan Quinones, 20, of Saratoga Springs, New York, and a sophomore at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, took first place in 15 minutes, 36 seconds(15:36). One second faster than last years winner, Alex Main.
Women’s Winner: After a mishap of being mistaken as a 15K finisher, Edie Allardice, 38, was pushed over to the side before finishing the 5K, the finish tape holders missed Allardice and instead second place winner Kailand Cosgrove broke through the tape. Allardice came in at 19 minutes, 9 seconds(19:09) just two seconds before, Kailand Cosgrove, of Tarpon Springs.
Sunday, February 22nd races
Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) – featured several of the fastest runners in the nation
Men’s Winner: Dathan Ritzenhein, two time Olympian, placed first in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 14 seconds. (1:03:14), Abdi Abdirrahman, four time Olympian, came in second in 1 hour 3 minutes 53 seconds (1:03:53), and Brett Gotcher third in 1 hour 3 minutes 54 seconds (1:03.54).
Women’s Winner: Jennifer Rhines, 40, of Boston, and also three time Olympian, placed first in 1 hour 12 min 34 seconds (1:12:34). Second place, Neely Spence Gracey, 24, of Boulder, Colorado come in at 1 hour 12 minutes 38 seconds (1:12:38).
Men’s Winner: John Noland, 40, of Tampa, FL placed first coming in at 25 minutes 35 seconds (25:35), second place finisher Tim Briles, 35, of Greenville, SC came in at 26 minutes 11 seconds (26:11).
Women’s Winner: Rebecca Decerbo, 31, of Orlando, FL placed first coming in at 25 minutes 23 seconds (25:23), second place finisher Erin Mclure, 26, of Tampa, FL came in at 29 minutes 47 seconds (29:47).
Expect the unexpected, The Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic brings out Pirate Costumes, banana men, even hot dog men. But this year, Patrick Thorpe, and architect for Jerel McCants Architecture in Ybor City came with the most creative. He came dressed as the Rivergate Tower.
