Cinco de Mayo Things To Do In Tampa Bay

Happy Cinco de Mayo - John Soliman and Associates of HomeXpress RealtyOther than the day that you associate Margarita’s with, do you know why Cinco de Mayo, is celebrated?

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is actually not observed as a national holiday in Mexico? Regardless what you have learned, Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day, that’s on September 16th.

Cinco de Mayo (or Battle of Puebla Day) commemorates Mexico’s struggle and unlikely victory against the much larger and better equipped French Army, at the Battle of Puebla on May 5,1862. This was during the Franco-Mexican War lasting 1861 until 1867.

If it happened in Mexico why is it a big deal here in the United States? Mexican-American’s in the 1960’s started using the day of Cinco de Mayo to celebrate their culture. With Parades, fiestas, mariachi bands, and food, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a day that doesn’t matter your ethnic background but only the reason to make you party.

The unofficial holiday isn’t just celebrated here in the U.S., but all over the world emphasizing Mexican cuisine, culture, and music. Cinco de Mayo is considered at par to unofficial holidays such as St. Patricks Day and Oktoberfest. Tokyo, Japan’s Yoyogi Park celebrates Cinco de mayo as a celebration of all the Americas & not just Mexican culture. Cayman Islands, hold an annual Cinco de Mayo air guitar competition.
